Shallow earthquake gives Aoraki/Mt Cook a shakeFAIRFAX NZ New Zealand has been rattled by a quake. A shallow 4.3-magnitude earthquake has given Aoraki/Mt Cook a shake. At the Old Mountaineers Cafe in Mt Cook Village, Charlie Hobbs said he had not noticed the earthquake. GeoNet seismologist Caroline Holden said most quakes below M4.5 would not be classified as strong unless they were particularly shallow. It was not unusual to have shallow earthquakes like this in New Zealand, Holden said.
