Drivers can run a wide range of motor combinations in this class but boats are restricted to a top speed of 95mph (152 kmh) - which is policed during races. Newman's win was confirmed by his first place in the NZ Power Boat Association (NZPBA) national championships at Karapiro on February 8. He had a clean run at Wanganui on New Year's Day to become North Island Champion, he says, and has now backed that up with the national title. Newman admits that for him racing a boat at speeds of around 150 kmh is not all plain sailing. The boats race a flying kilometre between two timing buoys, then have 45 minutes to prepare themselves for a return run.
