The Southland under-15 girls sevens team which won the South Island tournament in Timaru. The Southland under-15 girls sevens team impressed at the weekend when they were crowned South Island champions at the South Island tournament played in Timaru. The Andrew Rowland-coached team toppled Otago, Canterbury, a Hannan Shields team and Buller to win the tournament. On top of the under-15 team being crowned South Island champions the Southland under-18 also finished runner-up in Timaru. It included the return of a senior Southland women's 15-a-side team for the first time in many years.
