KUALA LUMPUR: In light of the brewing controversy over a ban on frontline hotel staff wearing the hijab in Malaysia, a National Social Council member is urging the setting up of a special committee to study discriminatory practices in the workplace. Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said that a specific law must be implemented to put an end to workplace discrimination on the grounds of race, religion, sexuality and gender. He added that the special committee would be tasked with reviewing discriminatory practices and making recommendations to the government. “The study will determine whether existing laws are sufficient to tackle the issue (of workplace discrimination). Some employment contracts can stipulate specific employment conditions – but they must not contradict Article 8 of the Federal Constitution, which provides for equality and non-discrimination.
