Server crash wipes out rich digital archive at Memorial University

About 70,000 gigabytes of information in MUN's digital archive was wiped out in early July when backup power failed during routine maintenance. The maintenance, done in early July, required staff to cut the power to the building and rely on a backup power supply to keep the server room running. But the backup power failed, according to David Sorensen, MUN's communications manager. The digital archive alone accounts for 70 terabytes — or 70,000 gigabytes — of data, said Sorenson. David Sorensen says there should be no problem for the upcoming fall semester, and the archive within the library itself has physical copies of everything lost in the digital archive.
