Peel has previously described the Serpentine as a “safe space for unsafe ideas” and served as a judge for freedom of expression awards. The Serpentine is this month taking part in a UN human rights initiative fronted by Ai Weiwei, the dissident Chinese artist. “The work of the Serpentine – and its incomparable artistic director – cannot be allowed to be undermined by misguided personal attacks on me and my family. Spokespeople for Bloomberg and the Serpentine did not immediately respond to questions on Tuesday about whether the two had discussed NSO.
