A magnitude-4.8 quake struck south of Martinborough at 10.58pm, followed by a magnitude-4.5 quake southwest of Wellington at 11.30pm. Three "light" earthquakes were also registered, with a 2.8-magnitude shake centred northwest of Gisborne at 10.51pm, a 2.7-magnitude quake east of Taupo at 10.59pm and a 3.4-magnitude quake southwest of Martinborough at 11.16pm.
