Serampore, known to spring surprises for political parties, witnessing a bipolar battle

SERAMPORE: Unlike most other Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal , Serampore has not been a stronghold of any single political party. Only the CPI (M) managed to win this seat thrice in a row, from 1971.The BJP has pitted its youngest candidate, 41-year-old Debjit Sarkar, against Trinamool Congress’ sitting MP Kalyan Banerjee in Serampore. It has been one of the most interactive rallies, he addressed in the state,” Sarkar told ET. According to Sarkar, the party listed Serampore among the first six seats where the PM wanted to hold election meetings. Political space around the festival widened here, with both the parties trying to appeal to “non-Bengali” voters.
