Nine months home detention for bashing two foreign tourists while they were freedom camping is too lenient a sentence, according to one of the victims. Denise Piper/Stuff Hamuera Tierney was sentenced to nine months home detention in the Whangarei District Court for attacking two tourists who were freedom camping. Simon Hendery A tourist assaulted while freedom camping says he will return to New Zealand but he won't be camping. After the incident, they were too scared to continue freedom camping and the holiday was effectively ruined. "Freedom camping is very much encouraged, without tourists being aware of the discussions or the risks.
