Sensible move to cut quake risk from building facadesDerek Flynn/Fairfax NZ Contractors demolish a Kaikoura building damaged in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake last November. Anyone who saw how old, unsecured building facades and parapets became lethal weapons in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake will also say it's a wise move. Indeed, there is an argument that even the relatively brisk year-long time frame for building owners to take action is too long. The building work will also be exempt from resource and building consents, providing the work is overseen by a qualified engineer. Most building owners should also welcome it despite the expense.
