OTTAWA — Senators mounted a last-minute challenge to the Liberal government’s oil tanker ban on Thursday, putting forward competing amendments that sought to emphasize Indigenous land rights as a way to skirt around the controversial moratorium in northern B.C. Senators voted on a handful of such amendments to C-48 late late into the night, in what could be the final pushback against the legislation. The Nisga’a was critical of the oil tanker ban in its testimony before the Senate. Senators on the transport committee had floated the idea of establishing a so-called “corridor” through the tanker ban area, which would allow oil tankers to dock at designated zones along the coast. “My own view is that nothing improves this bill, the ISG amendment actually makes the bill worse,” he said.
