Senate Republicans are expected Thursday to block consideration of a bill to create an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, a move that could make it difficult to answer some of the biggest lingering questions. CNN reported Thursday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is asking senators to oppose it as a “personal favor.”The bill, which models a Jan. 6 commission after the much praised 9/11 Commission, passed the House with support from just 35 Republicans. For example, the 9/11 commission report summarized classified national security documents and airport security footage of the hijackers that the public could not access. AdvertisementGilbert said a commission could nail down what happened, but multiple congressional committees, and their short hearings, might struggle to do so. “We know that some of what happened on Jan. 6 operationally involved failures in Congress’ own internal bureaucracy and operations,” Reynolds said.
