Sinead Overbye looks at how Māori writers are taking control of their own publication and distribution. This publication brought Māori writers from across the world together to respond to the peaceful occupation of Ihumātao. Within the past few years, more self-published volumes of poetry and prose have emerged from a rōpū of predominantly wāhine and takatāpui Māori writers in Pōneke. Many Māori writers are tending towards self-publication for smaller passion projects. The result was an exquisite publication filled with words from a large group of wāhine Māori writers, of which there are only 200 copies in the world.
