Morgan Stanley analysts Brian Nowak and Adam Jonas speculated that Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving car business, could be worth $70 billion to $140 billion. They will also quickly rack up key data from vehicles driven many miles under autonomy. The analysts believe Waymo can get to an operating profit by 2022 and reach 8% margins by 2030. However, in terms of the key metric of miles driven, the payoff was huge. In 2016, Alphabet had 635,000 miles driven under autonomy on California roads versus 20,200 for all of the others, combined.
