I’ve started playing football again, in a five-a-side league that uses the Astroturf pitches of a local private school. God in heaven, the hoops I have had to jump through to be allowed in there one evening a week. It’s not just the CRB checks (although why the news that I have no convictions for burglary or fraud makes me any less likely to interfere with a child, I do not know), it’s the precision of the timings when we are permitted to come and go, the signing in and signing out with security, the combination locks on the pitches and changing rooms, the chaperoning required when pupils are present . I mean, I am well aware that one has to protect children from nonces, but…
