Seaweed is one of the most under-rated champions in the fight against climate change (Business, March 22), and the giant of the seaweeds is kelp, the name of a group of huge seaweeds that are found in long ribbons along coastlines in dense underwater forests. These mammoth seaweeds grow at phenomenal rates and one type of kelp can grow by 60cm a day. Kelp absorb huge amounts of carbon to fuel their growth — across the world it is estimated that they soak up 600 million tonnes of carbon per year, roughly double Britain’s yearly emissions.
