The liberal instinct for moral outrage is similarly important as a catalyst for the protection of individual rights and the ongoing pursuit of equality. An instinct to conserve can lead to a status quo bias and a defence of indefensible traditions merely out of a sense of nostalgia. The far left and far right are actually marked by the same absence of gratitude. Both are struck more by what’s wrong with our society than what’s good. The only difference is the far left would replace our current institutions and norms with an ill-defined “successor ideology,” and the far right wants to restore a previous age that’s both idealized and unattainable.
