Sea level rise to put Timaru houses and infrastructure at risk

A rising sea level is predicted to put many areas in and around Timaru underwater over the next century. According to the specialised reports, most of Timaru’s Pacific Ocean coastline is at risk. South of Timaru, the South Island Main Trunk railway line will “most likely be compromised by erosion over a 100-year timeframe under all sea level rise scenarios,” with parts of the track compromised in the next 50. The Timaru port is also listed as at-risk, with waves from an extreme storm event “expected to overtop the port facility”.
