A village in Sutherland recorded the lowest temperature in the UK in 2023, the Met Office revealed. In December 1995, it matched the lowest ever recorded temperature in the UK of -27.2C. Writing on X, the Met Office asked followers to guess what they thought the lowest temperature was in 2023. The Met Office weather station at Altnaharra is the second most northerly on the British mainland, at a slightly lower latitude than Wick Airport. The coldest temperatures are likely to be across Scotland and the north where there are the lightest winds.
