Scotland trails UK in starting new businesses

The Federation of Small Businesses Scotland found there were more than 338,110 registered enterprises in 2018, a 46 per cent rise from 231,525 in 2000. The overall number of companies in the UK rose by 63 per cent to close to 5.7 million over the same period. Scotland’s population rose by 7.4 per cent between 2000 and 2018 while the UK gained 12.8 per cent. Separate federation research has previously shown immigrants and migrants have helped boost Scotland’s start-up rates.
