A smartphone equipped with a new 'bat-sense' technology allows the scientists who created it to generate images from sound and gain a sense of their surroundings. University of Glasgow experts developed a machine-learning algorithm to measure echoes and sounds that can generate images of the immediate environment. The technology also works with sound waves sent from an antenna in the gigahertz range. Those sound waves and blips bounce around the room knocking into objects and people as they move. A machine-learning algorithm times how long the blips take to return to the device that emitted them.
