Scientists have created what they say is the world's most efficient lithium-sulphur battery, capable of providing power to a smartphone for five continuous days. Lithium-sulphur batteries can provide an energy intensity five times higher than that of lithium-ion batteries. This can mean it reaches lower charging capacities of lithium-ion batteries before the electrode just falls apart and the lithium-sulphur battery stops working. Lithium-sulphur batteries could potentially displace lithium-ion batteries by delivering higher specific energy – or the energy per unit mass. To manufacture lithium-sulphur batteries, scientists replace the lithium electrode – the bit of metal that carries the electrical current – of a lithium-ion battery with a carbon-sulphur combination.
