New research may have cracked the mystery of how the Moon was formed from Earth’s proto-material. For a hundred years, scientists have argued about how the Moon was made, given that it’s primarily made up of material from Earth. The idea is that a Mars-sized object smashed into Earth millions of years ago and the Moon was formed in the aftermath. "In our model, about 80% of the moon is made of proto-Earth materials," said Yale geophysicist Shun-ichiro Karato, who has conducted extensive research on the chemical properties of proto-Earth magma, in a statement. The study, “Terrestrial magma ocean origin of the Moon”, was published in Nature Geoscience.
