During the Jat agitation in Haryana, some schools shut down fearing that the protests would reach the other side of NCR. Every winter we lose school days as pollution caused by farmers burning crops and trucks choking the highways makes the very air we breathe toxic. Last month, some schools shut in east Mumbai because Dalits were celebrating victory in a war against Peshwas that happened in 1818. Even if there are no governmental orders to shut schools, they still go ahead and declare a holiday in extreme risk-aversion. No study seems to have been done on calculating the loss of school days in urban India for reasons like the present one.
