For a sixth-consecutive year, Basil’s Sports Bar and Grill in Weirton presented scholarships to local athletes, one male and one female. Big Red football and baseball player Zach Smith, left, and Buckeye Local softball, basketball and cheerleader Kaydence Kinyo were the 2023 recipients, and were presented their $1,000 scholarships during a luncheon recognizing them inside “The Dugout” at Basil’s on Thursday afternoon. They were selected out of an applicant pool of more than 50 local athletes from the 10 high schools in Jefferson, Hancock and Brooke counties. Smith is signed to play baseball at Malone University, while Kinyo plans to attend the Ohio State University to continue her education. Basil’s plans to continue to offer its annual scholarship as a positive way to give back to the Upper Ohio Valley community.
