The Daily Nation has exposed how former Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago and his associates allegedly withdrew Sh203 million from a bank account meant for a scholarship programme that never materialized. According to the documents, the money was withdrawn in cash by Mandago's co-accused, Joshua Lelei and Meshack Rono, who were county officials at the time. The withdrawals ranged from Sh500,000 to Sh10 million per day, and were done without any supporting documents or approvals. The scholarship programme was supposed to send 1,000 students from Uasin Gishu county to study in Finland and Canada, but it turned out to be a scam that duped parents of over Sh1.1 billion. Mandago, who is now a senator, has denied any wrongdoing and claimed that he was not involved in the management of the fund.
