The United States has backed some Syrian rebel factions battling the government, and is leading a coalition conducting airstrikes against Islamic State strongholds in Syria. Russia has sent warplanes and troops to aid Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It leaves room for Syrian forces and others to continue attacks against perceived enemies. Residents of rebel-held parts of Aleppo, a city in northern Syria, said their neighborhoods were quiet on Tuesday following attacks immediately after the cease-fire began. Just after nightfall, government helicopters dropped barrel bombs and troops were shelling the main road for delivering humanitarian supplies, residents said.
