While the International Energy Agency (IEA) has long emphasised recycling’s potential, the first-ever IEA Critical Minerals and Clean Energy Summit really foregrounded the idea. The agency’s new report, Recycling of Critical Minerals: Strategies to scale up recycling and urban mining assesses the current state of recycling, explores the potential for secondary supply and presents policy recommendations to scale up recycling. Recycling critical minerals can make a differenceThe report shows that if recycling is scaled up, growth in new mines that supply critical minerals could be lessened by 25% to 40% by 2050.
