National Fisheries Research and Development InstituteTawilis is the only freshwater sardine in the world, and it can only be found in Taal Lake, a crater lake formed by the active Taal Volcano. In 2019, the government started enforcing a closed season for tawilis fishing to prevent overfishing and illegal fishing.
