Petition calls for a ban on bee-harming pesticideThe worldwide campaign to ban pesticides containing neonicotinoids is not new. In 2013, British campaigners in bee costumes protested in Parliament Square to urge Britain's government to ban them. Neonicotinoids also disrupt bees' immune systems, making them susceptible to viral infections to which the bees are normally resistant. Products containing neonicotinoids have been on sale in New Zealand for more than 20 years and they are found in products used both in commercial agriculture and by home gardeners here. That's why NZ Gardener editor Jo McCarroll has launched a petition calling on garden retailers to remove products containing neonicotinoids from sale.
