Tom Evans, 21, and Kate James, 20, want to take their 23-month-old son from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool to Rome for treatment and have begun an application to the Supreme Court for permission. The couple have already lost cases in the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights after Mr Justice Hayden ruled that doctors could stop providing life-support treatment for Alfie, who is in a semi-vegetative state.
