Saudi crown prince’s alleged hacking of Bezos raises press freedom concerns

Washington, January 22, 2020—The Committee to Protect Journalists today joined U.N. human rights experts in calling for an investigation into the alleged hacking of The Washington Post owner and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. NSO Group said "unequivocally...our technology was not used in this instance" in a statement on its website. “We are deeply alarmed by the allegation that the Saudi crown prince used spyware to undermine or suppress The Washington Post,” said Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator. Saudi Arabia is tied with Egypt as the third worst jailer of journalists worldwide, according to CPJ's most recent annual census of journalists in prison. Editor's note: The statement has been updated in the second paragraph with comment from NSO Group and the final paragraph with CPJ's research on imprisoned journalists.
