JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia—A Saudi court opened the country’s first trial in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Thursday, as the public prosecutor formally called for the death penalty for five of the 11 defendants accused of roles in the dissident’s death. The kingdom has faced intense international pressure to punish those responsible for the murder of Mr. Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.
