Saskatchewan launches constitutional challenge of federal carbon tax

OTTAWA — The Saskatchewan government launched its long-awaited constitutional challenge of the federal carbon price Wednesday, the opening volley in what could become a much larger battle between Ottawa and the provinces over carbon taxation. The federal tax will start at $20 per tonne in 2019, increasing by $10 per tonne annually to $50 per tonne in 2022. Instead, Manitoba has devised its own carbon tax at a flat rate of $25 per tonne. His government has a legal opinion suggesting that Manitoba could defend a carbon tax that doesn’t follow the federal backstop as long as it’s as effective at cutting emissions as the federal tax. “The Ontario PCs will scrap (Ontario premier) Kathleen Wynne’s cap-and-trade carbon tax, and fight any effort by Justin Trudeau and the federal government to impose a carbon tax on the people of Ontario,” he said.
