Sarawak Multimedia Authority Bill passed in assembly sitting

PETRA JAYA: The Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) Bill 2017 was passed at the second session of the 18th state legislative assembly sitting, here today. The newly-established authority will regulate digital development in the state, including digital infrastructure, cyber security, talent development, e-commerce, e-government as well as research and development initiatives. “It will also be responsible for assessing manpower needs in the digital field and initiative training programmes to develop potential talents,” he said. “Hence, the new authority's functions would not contravene any federal law regulating telecommunications or multimedia, which is a federal power. “We have also engaged with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and they are happy and supportive of SAM’s setup,” he said.
