On June 1, 2015, a court in Barisal sentenced Russell to death for killing Saoda Aktar. A second-year student of management in the Barisal University, Russell, 22, had a romantic relationship with Saoda, 19, who was a second-year student of accounting. Saoda's mother Shahida Begum filed a murder case with Barisal Kotwali police station accusing Russell and two to three unnamed others. On September 14, 2013, Russell gave a confessional statement before a court in Barisal about the killing.
