Sand cave-ins kill two teens in separate accidents

Two teens died this week after separate accidents in which they were buried in sand caves they were digging. • At Utah’s Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park on Saturday, Ian Spendlove, 13, of Santa Clara, Utah, was buried by about 6½ feet of sand when a tunnel he was digging collapsed, park officials said. He was taken to a hospital in St. George but never regained brain activity, and he died on Sunday. • At a beach in Toms River, N.J., Levy Caverley, 18, of Maine, died Tuesday after sand fell in on a large hole he was digging with his sister. In 2008, a similar accident occurred at Santa Cruz’s Natural Bridges State Park.
