Samsung Projects Record Q1 Profits As Memory And Display Demand Surges

Semiconductor And Displays Likely Drove GrowthSamsung’s memory business was likely the primary driver of the company’s strong performance, amid significant tailwinds in the memory markets. Global DRAM prices have been rising since June 2016, due to higher DRAM content in mobile devices and significant under-supply of PC DRAM as vendors reduced their production mixes in favor of mobile DRAM. NAND pricing and demand has also been strong, as OEMs increase the amount of memory per mobile device. Samsung’s display panel unit is also likely to have performed well over the last quarter, driven by demand for mobile OLED displays. Samsung dominates the mobile OLED market, with a market share of over 90%, making the company the biggest beneficiary of the demand growth.
