Saltwater pool and aquarium proposed for Nelson's waterfront

One bold suggestion put forward in the council’s Long Term Plan public submissions was for a new “Haven Precinct”, which would include a covered market, aquarium or education centre, and saltwater pool. An ambitious proposal to revitalise Nelson's waterfront that includes a public saltwater pool, a covered market and an aquarium has been floated before councillors. Roozenburg said retaining the seafood research building and renovating it to include features such as a cafe and aquarium would complement the setting and help establish it as a tourist destination. Historically the marine saltwater baths – which opened in 1878 – were located near this area and were a popular public destination. Nelson MP Nick Smith floated a proposal to set up a fishing museum and marine education centre in the historic building in 2014.
