The Red Sox were cruising along at 63-40, leading the American League East. The Athletics would now host the Red Sox in a one-game matchup for a trip to the Division Series. Anything approaching Sale’s first full season with the Red Sox in 2017 would have to be considered gravy. The Red Sox signed him to a five-year deal in March 2019, one that started the following season. There’s no question the Red Sox need it, and they need it now.
