Sailors celebrate 90 years on the waterRON FINCH Sailing action from the Waimakariri Sailing Club's 90th Anniversary celebration which featured a record 75 yachts sailing on the river in near perfect conditions. A record number of boats took to the water to celebrate 90 years of the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club. Around 100 guests of past and present club members, including the oldest club member, life member Jack Tourell who joined in 1938, attended the Saturday night function. The club was formed December 22, 1927, originally as a Power Boat Club but very few official records were kept until 1930. A few years later Power Boat Club members dwindled and the two clubs joined together and became the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club on September 6, 1934.
