The telco says it will instead keep its voice and data prices within reach of Ethiotel – the Ethiopian government telco that operated as a monopoly in October before Safaricom entered. “From a pricing perspective, our pricing strategy is generally to either be in line or slightly more expensive, but not to compete on price,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said in a recent conference call with analysts and investors. This comes after Ethiotel slashed mobile data rates by up to a third and launched mobile money services in preparation for the arrival of Safaricom.
