A savings and credit cooperative society has sued the water services board for increasing the waste discharge tariff by 200 per cent. Through lawyer Maina Njuguna, the officials say the Water Services Regulatory Board, Athi Water Services Board, Water Resource Management Authority and the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company have unilaterally and arbitrarily increased the waste discharge tariff without consulting them. The officials state that the increased levy, if enforced, will cripple their business making them lose their main source of livelihood. They claim 6he amount being increased is way too high for the services being provided by the applicants' members and amounts to denying them a livelihood. “The increment is not only arbitral but economically burdensome to the applicants members as it is way too high and incapable of being met,” reads part of the court documents.
