Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, the executive editor of party mouthpiece Saamana, has written to the State Election Commission (SEC) to complain of an Emergency-like situation, after a BJP member asked that the newspaper be banned during the election period. In his letter to the EC, Raut said the prevailing situation is like an Emergency, in which freedom of expression is denied. He said a complaint like the BJP's is one step towards such an Emergency. Although Saamana is an aggressive paper, it has always followed all laws for the past 28 years, and has never flouted the Election Commission's guidelines and orders, he said.
