SNP urged to end the 'healthcare tax' on dementia patients in damning new care homes report

The SNP Government has been told to end the "healthcare tax" imposed on people in the latter stages of Alzheimer's and dementia. A damning new report published by Alzheimer Scotland found that many Scots "wrongly" believe that elderly care is free. However, care fees for self-funded dementia patients can range from £1,200 to £2,000 per week. Henry Simmons, Alzheimer Scotland chief executive, said: "It is simply unfair and must be stopped. According to Alzheimer Scotland, an estimated 90,000 people are currently living with dementia in Scotland, with about 19,000 of those living in one of the country's 1000 care homes.
