They backed devolving powers over drugs law to Scotland to allow for "decriminalisation of possession and consumption of controlled drugs". They argue that the Westminster government is thwarting plans to treat addiction as a public health issue not a criminal justice problem. Last year saw a total of 1,187 drugs related deaths in Scotland in 2018, the highest number on record. The MP stated: "UK drugs law is not working for Scotland. "Therefore, the answer is simple - devolve drugs law to Scotland so that the Scottish Government can take the vital steps to tackle the drug-related deaths in Scotland."
