Investors are even more in love with technology companies than they were in the heady days of the 1990s. Indeed, in terms of coolness, heading a technology start-up is right up there with being a film actor, pop star or professional athlete. Above all, though, the action by the SEC appears to be a classic example of encouraging the others to behave. Staying private gives the founders much greater freedom to invest - and, to a large extent, to say - what they like. This was, of course, what Musk was contemplating when he landed himself in trouble.
