For many SCTV fans, especially those in Toronto, the final piece of the puzzle has fallen into place: Rick Moranis will be there on Sunday to tape a reunion chat with the rest of the cast at the Elgin Theatre. Then came a star-studded benefit show last summer that saw Moranis and Thomas revive their beloved Bob and Doug McKenzie characters from SCTV, which aired for six seasons between 1976 and 1984. The night before Netflix announced his Toronto appearance, he voiced his old character Dark Helmet from the movie Spaceballs for the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. Filming in Toronto and Edmonton, SCTV was picked up by NBC in the U.S. starting in 1981, earning positive comparisons to Saturday Night Live and winning two Emmy Awards. It featured actors and comedians such as the late John Candy and Harold Ramis, and made famous characters such as Short’s naive, excitable Ed Grimley and Bob and Doug.
