Officials are promising to restore order amid fears the shredded SCG surface won’t cope with a glut of games scheduled for the venue, including Friday’s Sydney Roosters-South Sydney NRL blockbuster. Large sections of Australian sport’s hallowed turf were ripped apart during Saturday’s Super Rugby match between NSW and Queensland, leaving management scrambling to repair the ground quickly. The SCG will replace 3,000 sq metres of turf in preparation for Friday’s game and will be available for a Roosters training session on Wednesday. “The rain prior to kick-off softened the surface and made it susceptible to damage,” Lewis said. With neighbouring Allianz Stadium – the home of several Sydney sporting teams – being demolished, the SCG is scheduled to host games featuring all four football codes in the coming months.
