“If biddat is sin, then why not talaq-e-biddat (instant triple talaq),” the court said on the day the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) argued its case for triple talaq. Triple talaq allows Sunni Muslim men to end a marriage by uttering the word talaq (I divorce you) thrice in quick succession. Instant triple talaq was not a popular way to end a marriage and such cases accounted for only 0.44% of divorces among Muslims, it said. “Triple talaq is not a question of equity and good conscience but of faith. The Centre has already told the court that it would frame a matrimony law for Muslims if it were to strike down triple talaq.
